She was only 11 years old when she was brutally murdered after being raped; her father found her lifeless body in a plastic bag. Her name was María González. Her killer entered the United States illegally as an unaccompanied minor and committed the crime when he was already eighteen years old. Like him, around 85,000 have been officially recorded as minors who were placed with families that were not their relatives, and it is estimated that 140,000 are beyond the government’s reach.
