María Fernanda Cabal, Colombian senator, calls for restoring rural connectivity and expanding access to credit to combat inequality
Senator María Fernanda Cabal outlined a series of urgent reforms to address the deep economic inequalities and insecurity affecting Colombia. She said that if the country truly wants to include everyone, the first step is to restore connectivity in rural areas, many of which remain isolated and under the control of illegal armed groups.
Cabal warned that the lack of access to credit affects both the poorest urban sectors and the middle class, forcing many to turn to informal lenders who later collect “at gunpoint.” She emphasized that expanding credit is essential to breaking the economic duality that produces “great wealth and great poverty,” while the political class occupies the middle of the system.
She added that in Colombia “it’s not money that is lacking — it’s thieves who abound,” denouncing that armed groups dominate entire territories and victimize the very farmers they claim to protect. In the face of this situation, she urged Colombians not to fall into relativism or allow lies to undermine the rule of law.
Finally, Cabal called on the country to focus on what is fundamental: enforcing the Constitution and the law, and moving toward consensus that will help build a fairer and safer future for everyone.
