Emily Cervantes Ramos, 18, was arrested in Kannapolis, North Carolina, after throwing a cup of liquid over a police officer’s head during an anti-ICE protest.
The incident took place during a demonstration involving around 75 students, many from A.L. Brown High School, who had gathered to oppose ICE immigration raids in Charlotte.
After throwing the drink, Ramos fled but was chased down, tackled, and detained; she was charged with assault on a government official and resisting arrest.
Kannapolis Police Chief Terry Spry defended the arrest, noting that while the right to protest is respected, illegal actions must be addressed to protect the community.
