Italian PM Giorgia Meloni and Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi at the Japan–Italy summit (VIDEO)

Japan and Italy significantly strengthened their bilateral relationship during the summit held in Tokyo with the participation of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In the context of the 160th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, the Japanese prime minister highlighted the depth of the meeting and announced the decision to elevate bilateral ties to a Special Strategic Partnership.

The new status includes closer cooperation in key areas such as security and defense, the economy, technology, strategic supply chains, and coordination in addressing international challenges, particularly in the Indo-Pacific. Both leaders emphasized that Japan and Italy share fundamental values and principles and reaffirmed their commitment to working together to contribute to global stability and the international order.
