The president of Venezuela’s National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, announced that the Bolivarian government, together with state institutions, has decided to grant the release of a significant number of people, both Venezuelans and foreign nationals who were being held in various penitentiary centers across the country. Rodríguez stated that these release processes are taking place “as of this very moment” and described them as a gesture with broad intentions aimed at seeking peace and peaceful coexistence in Venezuela.
Speaking at a press conference from the Legislative Palace, the parliamentary leader said that this decision is intended to ensure that the Republic “continues its peaceful life and pursuit of prosperity,” emphasizing that the measure reflects the government’s commitment to peace and national reconciliation.
Rodríguez’s announcement comes just days after a turbulent political context in Venezuela, marked by significant changes in the administration following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces in an operation that shocked the region. Within that scenario, the release of detainees — including opposition figures and foreign nationals — has been presented by the ruling party as a step toward stability and dialogue.
Human rights organizations and opposition groups have noted that while the announcement of releases is a welcome gesture, the actual number of people freed has been limited compared to the hundreds of detainees who, according to independent estimates, remain behind bars for political or arbitrary reasons. This has generated expectations as well as criticism over the lack of transparency in the process.
