Amid escalating acts of vandalism in downtown Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass said she does not believe the intervention of the National Guard is necessary, arguing that “the city is calm” and that the incidents are limited “to just a few streets.”
During an interview, Bass expressed regret over the extent of the damage caused by graffiti, burned vehicles, and other criminal acts, but insisted this is not a widespread crisis. “This is not happening across the entire city,” she stated.
However, her remarks have drawn criticism from those who believe she is downplaying the seriousness of the recent unrest, especially the anti-ICE protests that turned into looting and attacks on private property.
The mayor affirmed that individuals responsible for vandalism would be arrested and prosecuted, emphasizing that this is not the way to advance causes like immigrant rights.
Meanwhile, many residents and business owners are demanding stronger responses and concrete measures to restore safety in the streets.
