Late winter storm Saturday brought snow and icy roads to Texas

On Saturday, April 5, 2025, an unusually strong cold front swept across Texas, bringing severe weather and rare snowfall for this time of year. In the Texas Panhandle and the western part of the state, rain turned into snow as temperatures dropped sharply. Cities such as Amarillo, Dalhart, Hereford, and Plainview recorded between 1 and 3 inches of snow—an exceptionally rare occurrence in April for these areas. Temperatures fell from the 40s°F to near freezing on Saturday night, dropping further into the upper 20s°F by Sunday morning.

Farther south, San Antonio experienced two cold fronts: a weaker one in the morning that brought storms, and a stronger one in the evening that caused temperatures to fall into the 40s°F. Despite sunny skies on Sunday, temperatures remained 10 to 15 degrees below average, with chilly conditions continuing through Monday before a warming trend resumed.

In addition, a series of severe storms affected a swath of the United States from Texas to Ohio, resulting in at least seven deaths and causing significant damage. The National Weather Service warned that the storm system could intensify, increasing the risk of further flooding and severe weather, including the potential for strong tornadoes, particularly in northeastern Texas and western Arkansas.

These extreme weather conditions highlight the unusual and severe meteorological events that impacted Texas and surrounding regions during this period.
