In a decision that has raised blisters among upstanding Mexicans, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), dominated by justices aligned with the ruling party, Morena, has voted in favor of allowing the use of the hijab or Islamic veil in Mexican passport photographs. The resolution, made on December 11, 2025, with a decisive 8 votes in favor and only one against, was promoted by Minister Jasmín Esquivel, a figure already tainted by the plagiarism scandal in her doctoral thesis, who defended it under the argument of «religious freedom.» A monumental hypocrisy, when the very government she represents seeks to silence and regulate the voice of the faith that forged the nation: the Catholic faith.

This ruling is a clear example of how the globalist and progressive agenda, imported and foreign to our realities, is imposed from the highest spheres of power. A special privilege is granted to an infinitesimal community—barely 8,000 Muslims according to INEGI, representing 0.006% of the population—concentrated mainly in Mexico City and the State of Mexico. Meanwhile, what is the Morena government doing with the 78% of Mexicans who profess the Catholic faith? It persecutes them. In October 2025, it promoted an initiative to censor and regulate religious content on digital platforms, threatening sanctions against priests and Catholic leaders for expressing their beliefs on social media. An unbearable double standard: on one hand, doors are opened to religious symbols from foreign cultures; on the other, an attempt is made to silence the symbols and words of the religion that is the backbone of our national identity.

The justification of «protecting women» sounds like a mockery. In nations where the hijab is mandatory, such as Iran, it is imposed with state violence, with prison and lashings for those who resist. It is a symbol of patriarchal oppression, not freedom. While Europe struggles to defend its cultural borders and values against similar impositions, the Morena government, in a gesture of ideological submission, decides not only to permit it but to protect it judicially. Is this the «progress» they offer us? To prioritize concessions to minority agendas and foreign pressures instead of confronting the real problems that bleed the country?

The priority of any patriotic government should be security, the economy, and national unity. While the Court and Morena waste time on imported debates that divide society, organized crime continues to run rampant, drug trafficking claims thousands of lives, and insecurity gnaws away at family peace. This resolution is nothing more than legal bread and circuses, an attempt to divert attention and present a false image of modernity, at the cost of betraying the values that have given us greatness.

Where is equality before the law? If a religious veil is allowed, will any facial covering be permitted under similar arguments, compromising security and identification on official documents? It is a slippery slope that opens the door to more conflicts and exceptions, weakening the Rule of Law. Mexico does not need to imitate failed policies from other latitudes; it needs to reinforce its sovereignty, its security, and respect for its majority cultural tradition.
