Minneapolis Sues Federal Government After Shooting and City Impact (VIDEO)

Mayor Jacob Frey announced that the city, along with the state of Minnesota and local partners, has filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration in response to a series of federal actions that, according to local authorities, have had deep effects on daily life in Minneapolis. The legal action comes amid heightened tension following a shooting in which a woman lost her life during a confrontation with a federal agent in the city last week.

Frey said the lawsuit seeks to stop what he considers unconstitutional attacks on local residents and criticized recent federal tactics: “We are suing the Trump administration for its unconstitutional attacks against our neighbors. They are not pro-business or pro-safety. Their actions are purely political,” he said. “Minneapolis and our partners have nothing left to do,” he added, pointing to the need for a legal response.

The mayor also described how the situation has seriously affected the community: “We need relief, we are asking the court for it, but the damage we are suffering right now in Minneapolis is not limited to overtime costs. Schools are closing, businesses are closing, and people are afraid to go out and buy food, affecting families and small businesses,” Frey explained, reflecting the social and economic impact of recent federal agent deployments.

Frey added that the accumulation of adverse effects has created what he calls a “snowball effect” that goes beyond temporary conditions: “This is intentionally putting us in a very difficult position that is not pro-business or pro-safety. The only thing I can see is that this is pro-politics,” he concluded, underscoring what he views as the political nature of the federal response.

The lawsuit seeks a court ruling declaring the current federal operation in the state unconstitutional and limiting future actions that local authorities consider harmful to public safety and the economic well-being of Minneapolis and surrounding areas.
