The United States Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, shared a public message during a visit to troops deployed in the Caribbean for Thanksgiving Day. Accompanied by his wife Jenny, Hegseth highlighted the commitment of the military and expressed solidarity with the two guards seriously injured in the recent attack near the White House.
During his remarks, Hegseth noted that although he was carrying out official duties abroad, his thoughts remained in Washington, D.C., and with the members of the National Guard who were ambushed during an operation. He stated that he and his team are “praying for them, for their families, and for everyone standing with them during this critical moment,” reaffirming that the Government offers its “full support” to the victims and their loved ones.
The Secretary underscored that the attack not only strengthened the determination of security forces but also that of the Department of War itself, which — according to his words — will intensify its efforts to ensure that the capital and the entire United States remain safe. “We increase our resolve, just as they would, to protect the capital and safeguard the people of the United States,” he said.
From the Caribbean, Hegseth emphasized the importance of spending Thanksgiving with soldiers deployed on strategic missions, such as Operation Southern Spear. He expressed that, despite the distance and missing his own family, his priority was to accompany the service members who remain far from theirs during the holiday. “We know that family is the backbone of service, and we are deeply grateful for their sacrifice,” added his wife Jenny.
Hegseth also shared a family tradition by reading part of George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation, a historic message calling on nations to recognize divine providence, give thanks for its blessings, and ask for protection. Using that passage, the Secretary called for blessings and safety for both the deployed troops and those injured in Washington, D.C., as well as for all who defend the country’s interests around the world.
The message concluded with an emotional expression of gratitude to the armed forces, stressing that the Government is “here to serve you, support you, and stand with you in your mission.” With a solemn tone, Hegseth reiterated his hope that, despite the difficulties, all service members can experience a Thanksgiving Day filled with strength and hope.
