The U.S. Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, delivered a forceful message about what he described as a profound change in the cultural and strategic direction of the Armed Forces. In a speech marked by strong political and ideological overtones, he stated that the military is moving away from what he characterized as a period defined by diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies which, in his view, created internal divisions within the institution.
Hegseth argued that his priority is to consolidate a cohesive force under a shared identity, eliminating what he called approaches that distorted the core mission of national defense. In that context, he questioned both gender equity policies based on quotas and the central role that, in his opinion, climate change had been given in the Defense Department’s strategic planning.
The official emphasized that the Armed Forces must focus exclusively on readiness, discipline, and combat capability, steering clear of cultural debates that—he asserted—undermine unity. He advocated for a vision rooted in traditional values and a shared national identity, highlighting the importance of faith as a source of moral cohesion within the ranks.
His remarks reflect a shift toward a more conservative narrative within the Pentagon, aligned with sectors that criticize what they call a “woke agenda” in public institutions. For his supporters, this approach seeks to restore clarity to the military’s mission and strengthen troop morale.
