Republican Congressman Carlos A. Giménez made these remarks following the detention of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, an event that, according to the lawmaker, marks a turning point for authoritarian regimes in the region, especially for Cuba.
Giménez recalled that for years Venezuela has been the main political and economic lifeline of the Cuban regime. However, he stated that this support is now seriously compromised, leaving Havana in the weakest position it has faced in decades. The fall of Maduro, he noted, further worsens the crisis of the Cuban system, already battered by economic collapse and growing social discontent.
For the congressman, this new scenario opens a historic opportunity for the Cuban people. The weakening of their regional allies could encourage citizens to demand profound changes and to reject a model that has produced poverty, repression, and a lack of freedoms.
Finally, Giménez подчеркó that Maduro’s detention sends a clear message: dictators are not untouchable. In his view, when authoritarian regimes stop protecting one another, hope for democracy and freedom is strengthened both in Cuba and throughout the rest of Latin America.
