Recently, ten Democratic senators supported a Republican plan to fund the government until September 30, avoiding a government shutdown. This decision, which required overcoming the filibuster and securing 62 votes in favor, was praised by Trump. However, progressive figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized this stance, considering it a betrayal of the party’s principles.
Additionally, the November electoral defeat has deepened tensions within the party. At a recent retreat in Leesburg, strong disagreements emerged over how to address Trump’s agenda. While some leaders seek to redefine the party’s message and strategies, others criticize decisions they see as excessive concessions to the Republican government. This discontent is reflected in declining poll numbers and ongoing debates about the party’s leadership and future direction.
The division is also evident on immigration issues. While one faction of Democrats is looking for common ground with Trump, supporting legislation like the «Laken Riley Act» to strengthen immigration law enforcement, other members focus on addressing the concerns of affected communities and developing resources for those facing deportation. In particular, the Trump administration has taken a tougher stance on illegal immigrants with criminal records, emphasizing the need to deport those convicted of serious crimes such as homicide, drug trafficking, and sexual assault. However, progressive sectors within the Democratic Party have denounced these measures, arguing that some deportations impact individuals with minor offenses or complex life circumstances, fueling an intense internal debate.
These divisions highlight the complexity of a party that, following recent electoral defeats, finds itself in a phase of introspection and redefinition of its identity and political strategy.
