Criticism of Wasteful Spending: Millions in SNAP Funds End Up in Fast Food
Senator Joni Ernst raised alarms over a troubling use of taxpayer dollars within the SNAP program. She explained that nine states allow benefits intended to support vulnerable families to be used at fast-food restaurants—an approach that, far from encouraging healthy eating, diverts resources to fast-food chains.
Ernst revealed that, in just the past two years, $524 million in taxpayer money allocated to SNAP was spent on fast food. This finding calls into question the program’s effectiveness and raises urgent concerns about oversight and the responsible use of public funds meant to combat food insecurity.
