Columbia University’s Butler Library was the scene of a deplorable circus yesterday: about 100 anti-Israel protesters, masquerading as “justice fighters,” stormed the building, sparking riots that ended with 78 arrests by the New York Police Department (NYPD).
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced an immediate review of the visa status of these “phony revolutionaries,” making it clear that “pro-Hamas thugs” have no place in the United States.
The police response was swift and effective. Officers, fed up with the tactics of groups using “free speech” as a pretext for chaos, detained 78 agitators who refused to show identification while trying to leave the library.
Rubio, upholding the principles of law and order, zeroed in on the foreign nationals involved: “We are reviewing the visa status of the intruders and vandals. Pro-Hamas thugs are no longer welcome in our great nation,” he stated firmly.
This isn’t a new episode for Columbia. Since April 2024, the university has been a hotbed of pro-Palestinian protests that, under the guise of “social justice,” have devolved into acts of antisemitism and disorder.
The left, always quick to justify any excess if it comes with their victimhood stamp, has turned the campus into an ideological battleground.
The tipping point came with the occupation of Butler Library, a place meant for study, not the tantrums of these “activists” who, in the middle of final exams season, prefer chanting slogans over preparing for classes.
Two Columbia security officers were injured during the clashes, according to interim president Claire Shipman.
The context leaves little room for doubt. Since the Trump administration withdrew $400 million in federal funding from Columbia for failing to curb antisemitism, tensions have escalated.
Additionally, according to the Associated Press, over 1,000 foreign students have lost their visas in the U.S. since March for participating in similar protests.
The Jewish community also raised its voice. Brian Cohen, director of Columbia/Barnard Hillel, expressed outrage: “These acts of violence and antisemitism are intolerable. The university must take firm action against those responsible.” His words reflect the frustration of those bearing the consequences of these protests.
We are reviewing the visa status of the intruders and vandals who took over Columbia University’s library. Pro-Hamas thugs are no longer welcome in our great nation.
Rubio has received widespread support among defenders of order. Conservative users on social media, like @nicksortor, demanded action: “Step in, Tom Homan! Send these anti-American thugs back to the dump!”
And it’s no surprise: many of these protesters are foreigners who, instead of appreciating the opportunity to study in the U.S., use it to sow discord.
The left, true to its script, cries “repression” while ignoring that these groups aren’t seeking dialogue but imposing their agenda at any cost.
Organizations like Columbia University Apartheid Divest, which led the protest, have made it clear their intent is to “disrupt,” even if it affects students who just want to study.
This episode shows that the left’s permissiveness only breeds chaos. Thanks to leaders like Rubio, who don’t bend to progressive complaints, the United States is getting back on track.
Law, order, and respect for the values that made this nation great must prevail. America is for those who honor it, not those who destroy it!
