The Foreign Affairs Committee of Peru’s Congress approved this Monday, by 12 votes in favor and 6 against, a motion to declare Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, persona non grata.

The initiative will be debated in the coming days in the Parliament’s Plenary and responds to what is considered unacceptable interference by the Mexican leader in the country’s internal affairs.

According to the approved document, the measure is a firm reaction to Sheinbaum’s statements, who has insisted on rejecting the constitutional succession in Peru after the vacancy of former president Pedro Castillo, even publicly describing him as the “legitimate president.”

These statements were interpreted as a direct affront to Peruvian institutionalism and an offense to national sovereignty.

Congressman Ernesto Bustamante (Fuerza Popular), promoter of the motion, argued that Sheinbaum’s remarks are “high-handed and offensive” against Peru’s democratic legitimacy.

In turn, Maricarmen Alva Prieto clarified that this measure is not against the Mexican people, but rather in defense of Peru’s dignity. Congressman José Cueto warned that “the words of a president have an international connotation and must be spoken with prudence.”

This new diplomatic clash revives the tension between Lima and Mexico City, which had already peaked during the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also declared persona non grata in 2023 for similar reasons. Furthermore, in August of this year, Sheinbaum received Castillo’s lawyer at the National Palace, which exacerbated Peru’s discontent.

The decision reflects the defense of essential values such as respect for the constitutional order, the legitimacy of institutions, and national sovereignty. It is a political gesture that underlines the need to preserve the principle of non-interference, fundamental for democratic stability in the region.

The case highlights how the radical Hispanic-American left, embodied in figures like Sheinbaum, insists on supporting leaders accused of undermining democratic order.

Defending Pedro Castillo, responsible for an attempted coup d’état, means justifying institutional breakdown in the name of ideology. Once again, the left demonstrates that it prefers chaos and confrontation rather than respecting sovereignty and the people’s right to decide within the framework of law and democratic tradition.
