Cuban immigrant with criminal record brutally decapitates Dallas motel manager in front of his family
A crime of exceptional brutality has shaken the United States.
On Tuesday, September 10, 2025, at around 9:30 a.m., the manager of Downtown Suites motel, Chandra Nagamallaiah, 50, was decapitated after being attacked with a machete by Yordanis Cobos-Martínez, a 37-year-old Cuban immigrant with a lengthy criminal history.
The murder took place in front of the victim’s wife and son, who desperately tried to stop the attack but were unable to do so.
According to court documents, it all began with a seemingly trivial dispute: a broken washing machine that was not to be used.
The situation escalated when the manager asked for help to translate an instruction to the suspect. At that point, Cobos-Martínez left the premises, returned with a machete, and unleashed a series of fatal blows on Nagamallaiah.
After severing the head from the body, he kicked the skull, picked it up, and threw it into a nearby dumpster.The attacker was apprehended shortly afterward, still covered in blood and carrying the machete.
He faces capital murder charges under Texas law, which could result in the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole. He is currently in custody at the Dallas County Jail without bail.Cobos-Martínez had a criminal record in California, Texas, and Florida.
Immigration authorities had issued a “detainer” on him, a notification to keep him in custody due to his irregular immigration status.
However, he was released under the consideration that there were no effective conditions to deport him to Cuba.
This gap in the immigration system allowed an individual to remain free, ultimately leading to one of the most heinous crimes in recent years.
The victim, Chandra Nagamallaiah, an Indian-born man who had settled with his family in Texas, was known as a responsible worker and well-regarded by the motel’s guests.
