The United States Department of Justice has filed a federal indictment against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for alleged fraud, money laundering, and deceiving donors, after it was revealed that the organization transferred more than $3 million to individuals linked to the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazi groups between 2014 and 2023.
According to the indictment, these payments were carried out through covert structures to fund informants embedded within extremist organizations, which —according to prosecutors— contradicts the SPLC’s public narrative as an entity that fights hate.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the SPLC “was not dismantling these groups, but helping to manufacture extremism,” by indirectly financing activities that could inflame racial tensions.
FBI Director Kash Patel, present at the announcement, described the case as a serious breach of public trust, although he did not announce direct FBI charges, but rather supported the Department of Justice’s investigation.
For its part, the SPLC denied the allegations and defended its informant program, asserting that it was a long-standing practice to prevent violence and obtain critical intelligence on extremist groups.

The controversy intensifies in a tense political context, where the SPLC has been heavily criticized by conservative sectors for labeling right-wing organizations as “hate groups,” which even led the FBI to cut ties with the organization in 2025.
Finally, this case remains ongoing and could have profound implications both in the political sphere and in the credibility of organizations that have influenced public debate for years.
