This Monday in the metropolitan area of Atlanta, Lauren Bullis, an auditor with the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), was brutally murdered around 7:00 a.m. in Panthersville, DeKalb County, while walking her French bulldog. The victim was shot and stabbed and died at the scene.

Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26 years old, born in the United Kingdom and naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 2022 during the Biden administration, faces charges for two counts of malice murder, aggravated assault, and firearms offenses.

According to official confirmations from the DHS and police reports, Abel is also responsible for the death of another woman (identified in some sources as Prianna Weathers, 31 years old) outside a Checkers restaurant in Decatur around 1:00 a.m., and for the shooting that left a 49-year-old homeless man in critical condition outside a Kroger in Brookhaven.

Abel was arrested that same afternoon during a traffic stop in Troup County, thanks to vehicle tracking using license plate readers. He waived his first court appearance on Tuesday, April 14, and remains detained without bond in the DeKalb County jail.

His criminal history includes convictions for sexual battery, assault on police officers with a deadly weapon, obstruction, and vandalism, some of which were recorded even after his naturalization.

The Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, issued a strong statement: “These acts of pure evil have devastated our Department and my prayers are with the families of the victims.”

Mullin emphasized that Abel “has a prior criminal record that includes convictions for sexual battery, assault on a police officer, obstruction, and assault with a deadly weapon.” In addition, he noted that since the arrival of the current administration, processes have been strengthened to prevent individuals with criminal records from obtaining citizenship.

Lauren Bullis was remembered by her colleagues as a warm, kind, and dedicated person. She served in multiple roles in the DHS Office of the Inspector General, including as an auditor in the Office of Audits and as a team leader in the Office of Innovation.

Her family members and friends described her as a lover of her family, running, reading, and traveling. The DHS published: “A devastating loss for our department. Our prayers are with the family, friends, and loved ones of Lauren Bullis.”

This case highlights failures in the naturalization vetting processes, even when background checks are required. The tragedy occurred just days ago, and investigations continue to determine with precision the chronology of Abel’s criminal record in relation to his obtaining citizenship.
