In a coordinated operation with Interpol, Argentine authorities detained a Colombian citizen in Buenos Aires who is allegedly linked to the assassination of Senator and presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay, one of the most shocking political crimes in Colombia in recent years.
The detainee, identified as Brayan Ferney Cruz Castillo, was wanted by Colombian justice through an international red notice. According to authorities, his arrest occurred when he appeared before an Argentine court for a prior case, at which point he was taken into custody.
A Crime That Shook Colombia
Miguel Uribe Turbay was shot on June 7, 2025, during a political event in Bogotá while campaigning for the presidency. Although he initially survived, he died on August 11, 2025, due to the severity of his injuries.
The case generated national and international outrage.
Investigations indicate that the attack was part of an organized operation involving multiple actors, including minors used as material executors.
The Detainee’s Role
Authorities state that Cruz Castillo was not the direct perpetrator of the shooting but played a role in the logistical and support structure of the attack.
He is also linked to other individuals already convicted in the case, strengthening the hypothesis of a broader criminal network behind the assassination. Reports indicate he was the partner of Katherine Andrea Martínez (alias “Gabriela”), who was previously convicted for transporting the weapon used in the attack.
Possible Connection to Armed Groups
The Colombian Prosecutor’s Office has linked the crime to the Segunda Marquetalia, a FARC dissident group, suggesting the assassination may have had political motivations aimed at destabilizing the democratic process.
Extradition Process Underway
Following his detention, Cruz Castillo was placed at the disposal of the Argentine justice system, which is now evaluating his possible extradition to Colombia, where he will have to answer for his alleged participation in the political assassination.
The Case Remains Open
Although several people have been detained and convicted, Colombian authorities continue investigating to identify all those responsible, including the intellectual authors of the crime.
The assassination of Miguel Uribe Turbay remains a symbol of the persistent political violence in Colombia, especially in an electoral context marked by tensions and threats against candidates. The capture in Argentina represents another step forward in the ongoing efforts to bring justice to this high-profile case.
