The Debate on the “New France” and National Identity

Jean-Luc Mélenchon defended his concept of a “New France” as a broad political and social project that goes beyond the immigration debate and is rooted in his Marxist vision of society. He stated that this process is already underway, regardless of political resistance, and that the real challenge is not to stop immigration but to build an integrated people rather than a collection of ghettos.

The left-wing leader rejected both the idea of borderless nations and policies that, in his view, condemn migrants to die in the Mediterranean. He argued that France’s demographic reality already reflects a mixed society and criticized narratives about an alleged “migratory invasion.” Mélenchon concluded by asserting the role of the left as a force of direct confrontation against fascism and as a defender of a new model of national identity.
