Farmers from different countries of the European Union staged a massive demonstration in Brussels to express their opposition to the free trade agreement between the EU and the South American bloc Mercosur. The protest took place near the European Parliament, where demonstrators warned that the deal could seriously harm Europe’s agricultural sector.
Producers argue that the agreement would open the European market to imports with lower environmental and sanitary standards, which they say would create unfair competition and put thousands of rural jobs at risk. They are also calling for stronger safeguards to protect local production, food sovereignty, and the future of Europe’s countryside.
The mobilization highlights growing discontent within the farming sector over trade policies that, in their view, fail to consider the realities of rural life and the direct impact on small and medium-sized producers.
