Kast Sets a Radical Shift in Chile’s Foreign Policy After Presidential Victory

Chile’s president-elect, José Antonio Kast, set the tone for what his foreign policy will be with a forceful message against what he described as a “hypocritical” approach toward authoritarian regimes in the region. In his first statements after winning the presidential election, Kast said Chile must adopt a clear and consistent stance in defense of democracy and human rights.

The president-elect directly pointed to Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua as dictatorships, stating that in those countries the opposition is imprisoned, there are no economic, social, or political freedoms, and human rights violations occur daily. In that context, he said “the time has come to send a clear signal,” announcing his intention to sever relations with those governments.

Kast also said Chile will take on an active role in the region, leading a political and diplomatic process in Latin America aimed—according to his words—at the liberation of those nations. The proposal represents a profound shift from the approach of previous administrations and seeks to reposition Chile as a firm defender of democracy in the region.

In his speech, the president-elect also drew a domestic political line, stating that the country must choose between aligning with sectors he considers complicit with authoritarian regimes or with those who believe in and respect democracy. With this message, Kast made it clear that his administration will be marked by a confrontational foreign policy toward dictatorships and a clearly defined ideological stance from the very start of his term.
