Multiple people were hospitalized after Monday’s cheese roll in the UK.
Several people were hospitalized on Monday following the United Kingdom’s world-famous cheese rolling race, a centuries-old tradition held annually on Cooper’s Hill in Gloucestershire, England.
The bizarre and beloved event involves participants hurling themselves down a dangerously steep hill in pursuit of a large wheel of Double Gloucester cheese. The hill’s incline makes controlled running nearly impossible, often resulting in tumbles, collisions, and injuries.
This year was no exception. Local officials confirmed that multiple individuals sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals. Although the exact number and severity of the injuries remain unclear, eyewitnesses reported several hard falls as racers tumbled in their attempt to catch the cheese.
The tradition, which dates back to at least the 15th century, draws thrill-seekers and spectators from all over the world. For many, it represents not just a contest, but a proud and quirky symbol of British cultural heritage.
Despite growing concerns over safety —and calls from some corners to ban or regulate the event— many locals insist it’s an irreplaceable part of Gloucestershire’s identity. Though the cheese itself is rarely caught, often reaching speeds over 70 mph (110 km/h), the thrill of the chase is enough to keep the event alive.
As in previous years, this edition ended with bruises, laughter, and ambulance sirens. Yet for the brave —or foolhardy— competitors, it remains a badge of honor to risk it all for a rolling wheel of cheese.
