The Biblioteca Memorial Baxter has come under intense backlash after announcing a children’s storytelling event featuring drag performer Letta Dicken, whose content and style are widely seen as completely inappropriate for a young audience.
Images and videos circulating online show a performance marked by provocative behavior, suggestive attire, and actions that simply do not belong in a space intended for children. This is not a matter of interpretation or context—it is clear that this type of performance does not fit an educational environment or an activity designed for minors.
What happened reflects a serious lack of judgment by those allowing this kind of content in public institutions. A library is not a stage for such performances; it is a place for learning, development, and healthy growth. Exposing children to this kind of material is not inclusion—it is irresponsibility.
Attempting to normalize this type of content in children’s activities crosses a clear line. Childhood requires care, boundaries, and appropriate environments—not performances that introduce elements unsuitable for their age and developmental stage.
This case highlights a troubling disconnect between those organizing these events and what should truly be protected: the well-being of children. There is a place for everything—but this is not it.
