At a recent Homeland Security Committee hearing on Capitol Hill, two anti-ICE protesters disrupted the opening statement of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem by shouting slogans such as “Stop ICE raids!” and “Get ICE out of our streets!”, forcing Capitol Police to remove them so the session could continue normally. Criticizing this action is warranted: resorting to disruptions during an official congressional hearing, in addition to disregarding basic standards of order and civility, does not contribute to a constructive debate on public policy. Legislative hearings are designed for scrutiny, discussion, and accountability under established rules, not for staging spectacles or creating chaos in an institutional forum. Protests have their place in appropriate public spaces and should not be used to curtail others’ right to speak or to obstruct formal democratic processes.
