U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced the launch of massive audits by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) against financial institutions involved in laundering funds from massive frauds in Minnesota.

These audits will focus on banks, money services businesses (MSBs), and intermediaries that facilitated the movement of illicit funds, linked to government benefits scandals that have wasted billions of taxpayer dollars.

The initiative is part of a broader effort by the Department of the Treasury to combat rampant fraud, including investigations into four MSBs in the state and the issuance of a Geographic Targeting Order requiring enhanced reporting in Hennepin and Ramsey counties.

The announcement occurred during Bessent’s visit to Minnesota on January 9, 2026, where he emphasized the need to follow the money trail, even if it leads to the Middle East or East Africa.

«We will follow the money and prosecute those who violated the law, no matter where they are,» Bessent declared in a press conference, comparing these schemes to cartel money laundering.

The fraud is tied to the federal child nutrition program, such as the Feeding Our Future case, where funds were allegedly diverted by Somali communities, possibly toward terrorist groups like al-Shabaab, though no direct evidence has been confirmed to date.

For the first time, the IRS is being deployed in defense of American families, not against them, as happened under leftist administrations that expanded the agency to target conservatives.

Bessent highlighted that these civil audits will support criminal and civil efforts, including the creation of a task force to investigate the misuse of pandemic-era tax incentives and 501(c)(3) status.

Additionally, FinCEN issued alerts to financial institutions regarding fraud in nutrition programs and provided training to law enforcement.

The scandal has created political tensions, with clashes between Bessent and Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who represents affected districts.

Omar has defended the Somali community, while Bessent insists on accountability for public funds under the previous Democratic leadership of Governor Tim Walz.

Reports indicate possible «disturbing tapes» of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison receiving money to halt investigations.

This action by the Trump administration marks a conservative shift toward fiscal integrity, exposing failures in leftist policies that enabled such abuses; it is time to audit everything and prosecute the guilty.
