Drunk raccoon causes chaos in Virginia liquor store and goes viral

A raccoon became the unexpected star of an unusual incident this weekend in Ashland, Virginia, after breaking into a closed liquor store, smashing bottles, drinking from several of them, and being found unconscious in the store’s bathroom—apparently “drunk” after a night of excess.

An unexpected and wobbly intruder

According to the Hanover County animal shelter, the raccoon likely entered through the ceiling by knocking down a tile, gaining access without using the door. Once inside, it headed straight for the lower shelves where whiskey and scotch were stored, broke multiple bottles, and drank the contents before collapsing.

When employees opened the store the next morning, they found shattered bottles, puddles of alcohol on the floor, and the raccoon lying on the bathroom floor. Animal control officers rescued the animal and took it to a shelter so it could “recover from its hangover.” After a few hours and with no visible injuries, it was released back into its natural habitat.

Humor, memes, and a reflection on urban wildlife

The episode quickly went viral: social media users nicknamed the raccoon the “Black Friday Bandit” and the “trashed panda,” and local shelters and agencies even printed T-shirts about the incident, donating the proceeds to animal protection efforts.

Beyond the humor, the case highlights questions about interaction between wildlife and urban spaces, especially when animals have easy access to discarded food or beverages. Experts point out that raccoons—adaptable, intelligent, and opportunistic—take advantage of any opportunity, which in this case resulted in a chaotic “party gone wrong.”

From drunken chaos to responsible rescue

Although the incident began as a humorous story, local authorities emphasized the importance of responsible waste management, security in businesses that sell alcohol, and proper animal welfare protocols. The Hanover shelter praised the handling of the situation, noting that officers responded with calmness, professionalism, and even a bit of humor.

Ultimately, the raccoon was released without major injuries—aside from what was likely a strong hangover—leaving behind a story that will remain in collective memory: a blend of chaos, laughter, reflection, and a reminder that in real life animals often end up starring in scenes that feel straight out of an absurd comedy.
