NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte: “We must be ready; conflict is at our doorstep”

In a forceful message filled with warnings, the NATO Secretary General cautioned that the world is facing a critical moment as the first quarter of the 21st century comes to an end. He stated that today’s conflicts “are no longer fought at a distance,” but have instead arrived directly “at our doorstep,” marking a turning point in global security.

The leader of the Alliance noted that Russia “has brought war back to Europe,” reminding the public that the scale of the conflict could resemble what “our grandparents and great-grandparents endured.” He urged people to imagine a devastating scenario: homes and workplaces struck by violence, widespread destruction, mass mobilization, millions displaced, and extreme losses. “It is a terrible thought,” he said, but insisted that there is still a chance to prevent a tragedy of that magnitude.

The Secretary General stressed that NATO protects more than one billion people on both sides of the Atlantic and emphasized that the organization’s main mission is to safeguard families, friends, and the future of every citizen under its protection. He highlighted that “we cannot lower our guard — and we won’t,” while urging allied governments to uphold their commitments, move faster, and strengthen their defense capabilities.

As part of his call to action, he asked the public to reflect on the reality Ukraine faces: the sirens that sound daily, the bodies pulled from the rubble, and the lives that may end as people sleep. “Think of the Ukrainians who might go to sleep tonight and not wake up tomorrow,” he said. He then added that what stands between that devastation and the allied nations “is only NATO.”

Finally, the Secretary General stated that he has a duty to warn about what lies ahead if allies do not act with greater urgency. He underscored the importance of accelerating decisions, increasing defense investment, and maintaining steady support for Ukraine to prevent the conflict from expanding. “We cannot hesitate or fail,” he concluded.
