In his most recent address, President Gustavo Petro once again showed the lost direction of his government. In a confrontational tone and without concrete proposals, Petro called on Colombians to “take to the streets once again” and even referred to President Donald Trump as a “monster.”
Far from taking responsibility for the crisis Colombia is facing—marked by insecurity, unemployment, and the exodus of investments—Petro seeks to distract the population with ideological speeches and imaginary enemies.
While Colombia faces an economic recession and growing international distrust, the president continues to blame other countries and leaders instead of correcting his own mistakes. His words reveal an isolated leadership, more focused on political conflict than on real solutions the Colombian people need.
In his speech, Petro stated that the country must “defend itself together” and that “the aggression against Colombia is an aggression against the heart of the world.” However, many Colombians see in these phrases nothing more than empty rhetoric, without clear policies to improve citizens’ lives.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump—whom Petro tries to portray as an enemy—has been recognized throughout the continent for his firm stance against drug trafficking and for promoting order and national sovereignty.
Petro’s attempt to victimize himself before the international community only reflects the failure of a government that has lost its way. Instead of uniting Colombians, his words divide, polarize, and fuel instability.
Colombia needs leadership, not speeches of hate.
It needs solutions, not confrontations.
