This Tuesday, King Charles III addressed a joint session of the United States Congress in Washington, in a speech that sought to strengthen the “special relationship” between the United Kingdom and the United States, in a context of divergences between the British Labour government of Keir Starmer and the administration of President Donald Trump.

The monarch, who delivered the second speech by a reigning British sovereign before the Capitol since his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, did so in 1991, focused his intervention on the shared history, the reconciliation after American independence, and the need to maintain a strong alliance in the face of global challenges.

The speech is part of the four-day state visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla, organized to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States.

King Charles III recalled the cultural, historical, and values-based ties that unite both nations, from the influence of the Magna Carta on the American constitutional tradition —cited in more than 160 rulings of the Supreme Court since 1789— to the collaboration in critical moments of the 20th century.

“Our two countries have always found a way to come together,” he emphasized, according to reports from the live coverage. The monarch emphasized that the alliance “cannot rest solely on past achievements” and called for an Atlantic “renewal and reconciliation.”

He highlighted that “the challenges we face are too great for any nation to bear alone,” a phrase that resonates as a defense of international cooperation at a time when the Trump administration has questioned multilateral commitments.King Charles III made explicit reference to the defense of Ukraine against Russia and to the importance of NATO as a pillar of “common defense,” issues that have generated friction with London and other European capitals.

With his characteristic British sense of humor, the king joked about independence: “I dare say that, if it were not for us, you would be speaking French,” and alluded to the burning of the White House by British troops in 1814, saying he regretted “our own attempt to remodel the White House.”

He also condemned acts of political violence, in reference to the recent incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, and affirmed that “those acts of violence will never succeed.”

The speech took place hours after the king met with President Trump at the White House, where a state dinner was also held.

Although the monarch avoided direct confrontations, his calls not to ignore “the clarion calls to become ever more inward-looking” (appeals to isolationism) and to maintain global commitment were interpreted by analysts as a subtle message amid bilateral tensions, especially regarding foreign policies such as the war with Iran and support for Ukraine.

King Charles III recalled that “the words of the United States carry weight and meaning, but its actions matter even more,” and appealed to redouble the “selfless service” that has defined the transatlantic relationship.

The legislators responded with frequent applause and ovations, including a highlighted moment when the king defended the checks and balances of the constitutional system.

This historic event underscores how, even in times of political differences between governments, the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom rests on deep roots that transcend specific administrations.

The king, as a figure above partisan politics in his country, fulfilled a traditional diplomatic role of the British monarchy: building bridges and reminding both nations of the shared interests in security, trade, and democratic values.
